Sam roughing up the animals at petting zoo

Sam is much more taken with animals than Ana was at his age. He's fearless--he was roughing up the goats yesterday at the petting zoo. And he makes an excellent woofing noise every time he sees a dog.

Cities are stressful.

Cities are stressful. Even if you're just sitting at home, relaxing on your couch, there is something stressful about being in a city. Is it the low background hum from all the vehicles and factories? Or is it the negative energy from 2 million stressed-out human beings? Should I have a glass of wine? Or move back to Fruitvale?

Lonely

It's day 6 with no wife or kids and I'm really, really lonely. I think I'll dump the toy box in the kitchen and smear some muffin on the couch, just to make things seem more homey.

Friend portfolios

Some people have friend portfolios. A single friend, a couple friend, a friend with kids. A white, a black, an asian. An eternal student, a blue collar worker, a professional. Sometimes I feel like I'm getting invited just to round out the portfolio. For some I fill the "religious fanatic" market segment; for others, I fall into the "says shocking but funny things" high-risk category.

Time to start thinking about camping

It's finally summer weather again and it's time to start thinking about camping. Here's Sam getting a bath in a bucket when we camped last August at www.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/ellison.htm">Ellison Provincial Park. This year, I'd like to head over to camp at www.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/montague.htm">Galiano Island.

Day two of kid-free life

On day two of kid-free life, I... 1) Washed the car; 2) Replaced all burnt-out light bulbs in the house; 3) Had a service call to reconfigure my home security system; 4) Unclogged the sink and tub drains; 5) Replaced the compression washer on the kitchen sink; 6) Performed preliminary analysis on 8 digital asset management systems; 7) Framed 3 pictures; 8) Did a half-hour Pilates work-out; 9) Purchased supplies to build a closet organizer for Gina; and 10) Made myself 3 meals and managed to keep the kitchen clean. If I was this productive all the time I would be very rich or very burnt out.

Day 1 of bachelor life

Day 1 of bachelor life is pretty good. Without kids, it's like I have 5 extra hours in the day. What do single people do with all their time?

Sam, Ana and Gina are off to Nelson for a week

Sam, Ana and Gina are off to Nelson for a week. It's the first time we've been apart since October 2002. I look forward to the best sleep I've had in 2-1/2 years... and to being really lonely in about 3 days.

Progress

Sam is almost walking. Ana is almost toilet trained.

Watching planes land

Sam and Ana and Gina and I parked at the end of the airport runway today and watched planes land. I've been wanting to do that for years. We even had a 747 land while we were there, though it wasn't as spectacular as this.

About

I'm an intranet consultant living in Nelson, BC. My company is One Intranets Inc. I'm the co-creator of ThoughtFarmer, social intranet software that powers enterprise intranets in Microsoft environments. I've been consulting on web and intranet projects since 1995 with a particular emphasis on interface design, information architecture and usability analysis.

I live with my wife, Gina, and our three children, Ana (age 7), Sam (age 5), and Reuben (age 1). Gina is my best friend and the absolute bestest wife a man could ever find. Ana is the most hospitable and intuitive 7-year old you'll ever meet. Sam accosts strangers on the street and engages them in deep conversation. Reuben walks from room to room and creates disasters, washing his hands in the toilet, lifting cats by the tail and eating things he finds in the kitchen garbage.

When I'm not working I'm playing with my family: golf, swimming, snorkeling, hockey, skiing and extreme travel. We're currently escaping winter with a 4-month stint in St. Lucia, West Indies.
